In this episode of Tuesday Tips, Jean Fleming joined us to discuss leveraging local media to promote your school.
Here are the session’s top tips:
- Build strong relationships with local media. Cultivate a proactive relationship with local media early in the school year. Regularly share positive updates like enrollment numbers, special events, or guest visits. This will help establish a foundation for future stories and make the media more likely to cover your school in a positive light.
- Use email for outreach. Begin your outreach with well-crafted emails. Reporters are more likely to respond to emails than phone calls, and emailing gives you the opportunity to carefully control your message. Persistence is key, as you may need to reach out multiple times before securing a response.
- Align your school’s story with community interests. Think about how your school’s activities and achievements can align with current events in your community. Whether it’s participating in a local celebration or responding to a larger trend, tie your school’s story into broader news topics that are already getting attention to increase the chances of media interest.
